What Should Families Know First?

Yes, specific infant teethers and teething products have been recalled for hazards such as choking or contamination. Match the exact model and lot to an official notice before deciding whether a product is affected. The examples below distinguish US recalls from the Canadian Nuby IcyBite Keys lot recall.

Are teethers and teething products safe?

From infant teethers and teething rings to homeopathic teething tablets and over the counter benzocaine gels, dozens of products promise to take the discomfort out of teething. But no matter how effectively these remedies soothe aching gums, they are not without risks, especially if they are defective or contain toxic ingredients that could harm a child. If your son or daughter was hurt by an infant teether or other teething product, please contact our law firm to learn more about your legal rights.

Can infant teethers cause choking?

There are many infant teethers on the market, including teething rings, teething eggs and teething pacifiers. They remain the go to solution for teething pain, and the light pressure of chewing on a toy can provide some relief from tender gums. But infant teethers that contain beads or small parts that could separate pose a significant choking hazard. Babies can also choke if a solid plastic teether breaks into pieces in their mouths, and even chewing straws, teething tubes and sticks have drawn complaints of babies gagging and choking. Companies that manufacture, distribute and sell infant teethers must ensure their products are safe for babies and provide prominent warnings about any possible hazards. Parents may be entitled to seek compensation from a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit anytime the failure to do so results in harm to a child. Our pages on choking injuries and defective toys and products explain these cases.

What was the Battat B. toys Firefly Frank teether recall?

In April 2021, Battat recalled around 61,000 B. toys Firefly Frank Infant Teethers sold exclusively by Target. The company had received 14 reports of the teethers’ wings detaching or pieces of the wing breaking off, and one child is known to have choked on a broken piece of the wing. The blue, green and red teethers are shaped like a firefly and light up when shaken. They were sold at Target stores and Target.com from July 2019 through February 2021 for about $6 to $10. Consumers should immediately take the teethers away from young children and return them to any Target store for a full refund, or contact Battat to return them by mail. See the recall notice.

What was the Miniware teething spoon recall?

In June 2020, Bonnsu recalled roughly 32,200 Miniware Teething Spoons that can break in a baby’s mouth when used as a teether. The spoons are made from food grade silicone for infants in the teething phase, roughly 4 to 24 months of age, and the company received one report of an infant who bit through the spoon, causing a piece to separate inside the child’s mouth. They were sold at Miniware.com, Amazon.com and in stores nationwide from December 2017 through March 2020 for between $14 and $42. Consumers should stop using them immediately and contact Bonnsu for a free replacement.

What was the Manhattan Ball recall?

In July 2020, Manhattan Toy recalled more than 22,000 “Manhattan Ball” activity toys because the plastic tubes can detach from the center ball and release small silicone teethers threaded on the tube. The company received six reports of tubes detaching, including two in which the silicone teethers were released, and one incident of a child mouthing a teether after it separated. The toy was sold at Target stores and Target.com from July 2019 through June 2020 for about $10, and lot codes 325700EL or 325700IL are printed on the center ball. Consumers should take it away from children and contact Manhattan Toy or return it to any Target store for a full refund.

What was the Infantino Go Gaga Coco the Monkey recall?

In February 2014, Infantino recalled around 191,000 Go Gaga Squeeze and Teethe Coco the Monkey toys after seven infants choked or gagged on the monkey’s tail. The squeaking toy was made of soft orange rubber, “Infantino” is marked on the back, and model number 206-647 is marked inside the rear left leg. It was sold at Target stores and online from December 2012 through January 2014 for about $13. Consumers were warned to take it away from infants immediately and contact Infantino for a free replacement.

What was the Empire Silver teething ring recall?

In December 2007, the Empire Silver Company recalled around 1,000 sterling silver teething rings because the silver ball that held the ring in place could separate and release the beads inside. They came in three styles and were sold at independent jewelry, gift, specialty and department stores during November 2007 for between $50 and $120. Consumers were advised to take them from infants and return them for a full refund or replacement.

What was the Bright Starts teether beads recall?

In January 2007, Kids II Inc. recalled 375,000 Bright Starts Star Teether Beads and Bright Starts Teether Beads following 24 incidents of the beads becoming detached when the teether’s flexible ring broke or cracked. The Star Teether Beads (model 8483) and Teether Beads (model 8549) were sold at discount department and juvenile specialty stores from June 2006 through January 2007 for between $1 and $3. Parents and caregivers were advised to take the product away from children immediately and contact Kids II for a free replacement.

How do I check whether my baby’s teether has been recalled?

Search the brand and product name on CPSC.gov or SaferProducts.gov, and look for the model number or lot code on the product or packaging. Families often ask about brands such as Nuby, Infantino and Bright Starts. This page covers the recalls listed above, so check any other brand directly with the CPSC rather than assuming it is or is not recalled. Sign up for CPSC recall email alerts, register baby products with the manufacturer, and throw away any teether that is cracked, sticky, peeling or missing a piece. For Sophie the Giraffe, Mombella or other brands, verify an official notice for the exact model.

Are teething necklaces and jewelry dangerous?

Yes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that teething jewelry, including bracelets and necklaces made from amber, wood, marble or silicone, should not be given to infants. The warning followed the case of a 7 month old who choked on the beads of a wooden teething bracelet while under parental supervision, and tragically an 18 month old who was strangled by his amber teething necklace during a nap. Other risks include mouth injuries and infections. Our page on strangulation explains related hazards.

Which Nuby IcyBite Keys Were Recalled in Canada?

The instruction is to stop using the affected teether and contact the named importer for replacement arrangements. Match the exact identifiers in the Health Canada notice. This is a Canadian, lot-specific recall, not a statement that every Nuby teether or all US products were recalled.

Health Canada published a recall on January 21, 2026 for a specific batch of Nuby IcyBite Keys teethers. The notice identifies item 530455 and lot ED04Z, with the lot marked on the ring as well as the packaging. Testing identified bacteria in the liquid filling; the notice reported no Canadian incidents or injuries as of publication.
