Strattera (Atomoxetine)
Therapy with Strattera sympathomimetic is carried out orally once a day, regardless of food intake according to the following instructions. It is best to take the drug in the first half of the day – in the morning.
Therapy with this drug should be carried out strictly under the supervision of a doctor who is experienced in working with ADHD patients. If the drug therapy with a frequency of once a day causes any negative reactions, the patient is recommended to divide this reception twice, respectively, dividing the dose taken in half. In this case, Strattera is taken in the morning and in the evening.
Therapy of children and adolescents whose weight has not reached the 70-kilogram mark begins with a dosage of 500 mcg/kg, followed by an increase over three days to 1.2 mg/kg. If the desired effect is not achieved, the daily maximum can be increased to 1.8 mg/kg, but only after 14-28 days from the beginning of the course of treatment.

Dosage and application methods
Therapy of minors whose weight exceeds the 70 kg mark, as well as adult patients, is carried out in the following way: the initial daily volume of the drug taken is 40 mg. Then, the dosage is increased to 80 mg, but only after three days.
If there is no desired effect, the dosage can be increased to a maximum of 120 mg, but only after 14-28 days from the start of therapy:
- The dosage for support is 80 mg
- The daily maximum is 120 mg
If patients suffer from impaired renal function at a severe stage, then the active substance comes out at a slower rate. However, the difference was not noted in case of dosage adjustment. Accordingly, Strattera can be taken by patients with impaired renal function in the usual dosage.
Treatment of diseases during pregnancy and lactation
Due to the fact that there is no clear information about the possibility of taking the drug by expectant mothers, it is extremely undesirable to take Strattera during pregnancy. The reception is possible only under the strict guidance of the attending doctor and only if the benefit of this drug is higher than the possible harm from its reception. There are no data on the possibility of penetration of atomoxetine into the mother’s milk, respectively, it is better to refrain from therapy with this drug.
Restrictions on reception
The drug should not be taken in case of an allergy or an increased susceptibility to the ingredients of the drug. This drug is contraindicated for use in case of:
- severe cardiac dysfunction
- combined therapy with IMAO
- angle-closure glaucoma
Strattera therapy in patients with diseases that manifest themselves as high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, increased physical exertion, as well as taking psychotropic substances that activate mental activity, should be carried out extremely carefully.
Impact on driving
The effect of Strattera drug can lead to a feeling of weakness. Therefore, during the treatment with this drug, it is advisable to refrain from driving various vehicles and activities that require a high degree of concentration.
Notes
Prolonged reception of Strattera does not cause a habit. After the end of the reception, there are no negative consequences and drug withdrawal syndrome. The microcapsule is not disclosed when taking it. The active substance provokes irritation of the eye mucosa. If the component of the microcapsule gets on the mucous membrane of the eyes, then they must be urgently rinsed with a large amount of water. After rinsing, contact a specialist for help.
