Concussions for Young Athletes

Concussions can occur in sports that children play.  It is a serious injury that should require immediate medical attention to ensure that the child’s injuries would not worsen.

Several states are beginning to pass bills that would place restrictions on children with concussions from returning to a game without medical consent.  The main example of why these types of laws are important is the case with Zackery Lystedt.  Zackery suffered a concussion in a football game and returned to the sideline to recover.  After feeling better,  he returned to the game.  After making a big play and forcing a fumble,  he collapsed.  His dad rushed to his side and Zachery’s last words to his dad was that he could no longer see.  He was rushed to the hospital and it was found that his brain was hemorrhaging. Zachery now suffers from brain injuries as a result of him being sent back into play.

It is important to remember that if a child has a concussion,  they should not return back to a game.
