A warning to parents this holiday season concerning a popular beach chair made specifically for children. Build-A-Bear Workshop will have to shell out $600,000 to settle allegations concerning possible dangers of the toy, including fingertip amputation.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the fine.

The CPSC says the company, which is based in St. Louis, MO knew the beach chairs were dangerous well before they notified the agency in March of 2009. In fact, the company actually began receiving reports in July of 2007, that the toys could pinch, lacerate or cut off a child’s fingertip if it were caught between the chair’s wooden frame as it bended or folded.

The chairs, which were sold as an accessory to company’s popular stuffed animals, were voluntarily recalled in May of 2009 after Build-a-Bear stopped selling the product in October of 2008.

As many as 200,000 of the toy chairs were sold between 2001 and 2008.

We have some important information to tell you about regarding the safety of electronic toothbrushes and children.

A Florida mother was monitoring her 3-year-old daughter as she brushed her teeth with a battery –operated electronic toothbrush. She noticed the little girl was clearly irritated by something. It turns out a small pin out popped out the main body of the toothbrush and had scraped the girl’s gums and teeth.

A trip to the dentist confirmed these minor injuries, but what scared the mother the most was the potential for a much more serious situation.

The mother was concerned because of other possible hazards and injuries that could have occurred, such as swallowing the pin or choking on it or another part of the mechanism.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received about 15 complaints regarding malfunctioning electronic toothbrushes.

The particular brand in question was the Barbie battery-operated Spin Toothbrush.

If your child or a child you know has had a problem with a defective or malfunctioning electronic toothbrush, The Killino Firm wants to know about it.

We have important information to tell you about regarding drop-side cribs. Starting June 28, 2011, these types of cribs will no longer be able to be sold or made in America. This goes for not only retail stores, but also second-hand and thrift stores. Non-drop side cribs will also have to observe new and more stringent safety standards.

Drop side cribs have come under major scrutiny over the years because of problems associated with their design. Experts contend that the plastic hardware can break and easily be installed upside down. These issues can then lead to serious issues such as the drop-side part to detaching and separating. This in turn can cause serious and potentially deadly problems for infants and toddlers since they can become trapped between the mattress and the space that is created. This can lead to suffocation.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of at least 32 infants who have died since 2002 as a result of becoming trapped in a drop-side crib. Childcare centers and public lodging facilties have until December 28, 2012, in order to replace existing cribs with cribs that meet the new federal safety standards.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a new recommendation regarding toddlers in car seats based on a study from the University of Virginia. Their research found that children under 2 are actually 75 percent less likely to endure serious or even deadly injuries in a crash if they are in a car seat and facing the rear.

Here’s why. Experts contend that if a baby is facing front, its upper body may be restrained, but during a violent crash, the child’s head and neck can violently jerk forward, causing injury.

Basically the proposal is to get parents away from the idea that as soon as their child turns one they should turn them around and face-forward, which could actually wind up hurting them.

The new guidelines also recommends that older children should ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until they are 4 feet 9 inches tall, and 8 to 12 years old.

We have very important information to tell you about regarding child restraint systems. Almost 800,000 child safety seats are being recalled. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued the recall today and says it involves booster, convertible and infant seats made by Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG). The company is based out of Columbus, Indiana.

The Problem

NHTSA says the main issue has to do with the harness locking and release button. Officials say the button does not always go back to the locked position. When this occurs, the harness adjustment strap can actually slip back through the adjuster if the child moves around in the seat. This basically increases the chance that the harness will become loose, which could make it more likely that a child is injured in a crash.

Dorel says the products in question were made from May of 2008 through April of 2009. Parents should know that the particular models affected have something called a “Center Front Adjuster” for the harness.

The child safety seats were sold under various names including Cosco, Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st.

Questions

If parents or caregivers have questions about the Dorel child restraint system, please call 1-866-623-3139 Monday Through Friday from 8 am to 5:00 pm, EST.

In the midst of the holiday season we have an important recall to tell you about involving a certain type of baby product.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission along with Baby United LLC dba Babylegs, of Seattle, Washington, is recalling BabyLegs brand leg warmers and socks.

The product contains a small ornament shaped like a heart that can detach. This can cause a choking hazard for a child.
Parents or caregivers who purchased this product are urged to stop using it immediately. Parents can also remove the heart-shaped ornament as a precautionary measure.

The recall involves as many as 4,500 units, which were manufactured in China. The recall came about after one incident involving an infant who choked on the ornament, which came off the product. Luckily the child’s parent was able to come to the baby’s rescue.

The baby leg warmers and socks were sold at various retailers from August 2010 to November of this year. The products were also sold through www.babylegs.com.

This recall involves only BabyLegs brand leg warmers, ankle-high socks and knee-high socks with a heart-shape ornament. The recalled products are pink, white or purple cable knit socks and leg warmers.

The CPSC voted to do away with drop-side cribs because of dozens of infant deaths and numerous recalls of the products. In the last three years, as many as 36 infants have died because of structural and design problems associated with the cribs. The drop-side cribs have sliding sides, which make it easier to lift infants and babies out of the crib. However, the drop-side rail can malfunction and actually detach. This creates a gap which a child can fall into and become caught and possibly suffocate or strangle.

CPSC officials say the new law enforces much tougher crib mattress standards as well stronger safety testing.

There were quite a number of recalls in 2010 and this post serves not only as a summary of the bigger child product recalls but also as a reminder for parents and caregivers to be on the lookout for potentially dangerous products.

In 2010, we had major child product recalls on everything from children’s drugs and drop-side cribs to sleep positioners, strollers and toys.

In January, Dorel Asia recalled more than 600,000 drop-side cribs because of suffocation and strangulation hazards to babies. The overall problem with this type of crib is that the hardware can fail causing the drop-side to detach. This poses a serious risk because an infant can fall and get caught between the drop-side and the mattress. As recently as this month, Bassett Furniture recalled as many as 90,000 bassettbaby drop-side cribs for the same reason.

These recalls have prompted a call to completely ban drop-side cribs because of the potential danger they pose.

There were also multiple toys recalled including ones from big companies such as Fisher-Price. In September, the company announced a major recall involving as many as 10 miilion products. The toys were recalled for various reasons including infant toys with inflatable balls that pose a choking hazard. The recall also included numerous high chairs.

This year moms and dads were also told to stop using certain medications including Children’s Tylenol products. Items such as Tylenol Infant Drop and Motrin infant drops as well as dozens of other medications were recalled because of quality standard issues.

2010 also saw a recall involving a product known as sleep positioners. The alert was issued in September after the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration received a dozen reports of children who had died using this type of product since 1997. The problem has to do with infants who became trapped between the sleep positioner and the side of the crib or bassinet.

Many gifts for children and parents are bought at this time of year, so it’s important for everyone to be cognizant of what potential dangers are out there, to be on the lookout for defective products and to be educated about products being given to children.

Attorney Jeffrey Killino’s focus is on keeping kids safe and he knows the problems associated with your children through no fault of their own is a very serious matter and can leave a parent feeling helpless. If you believe your child was injured or has developed a serious illness due to a defective product, please call recalled baby product lawyer Jeffrey Killino at 877-875-2927.

Over the past year, I’ve alerted readers of this blog to numerous recalls related to various children’s products, whether they are high chairs or toys. Unfortunately, that trend continues today with yet another recall of an all-too familiar baby product—drop side cribs.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled Bassettbaby drop-side cribs and says the problem is the same it has had with other drop-side cribs–children can become trapped and possibly suffocate.

Consumers are urged to stop using this product, which was sold by Bassett Furniture Industries of Bassett, Virginia and were manufactured in various countries including China, Croatia, Slovenia, Taiwan and Vietnam.

As many as 90.000 of the drop-side cribs are involved in the recall and reported incidents include a child becoming trapped between the mattress and drop-side of the crib. The company has also received more than 100 reports of the crib’s hardware breaking during use or when it was being put together.

Here’s The Problem

The CPSC says basically the unit’s drop-side rail can malfunction and actually detach. This creates a gap where a child can fall into and become caught and possibly suffocate or get strangled.

This particular brand of drop-side cribs was sold at various stores all over the country from January 2000 through August of this year.

What should Parents Do?

Parents and caregivers should contact Bassettbaby for a free kit that will immobilize the drop side of the crib. Also, as a note of caution, parents should not try to repair the drop-side portion of the crib, since some babies have actually died where someone tried to make a repair on their own.

It should be noted that exactly one year ago today, the government issued the biggest recall of drop-side cribs. That recall involved more than 2 million units. Since then there has been a call to completely ban drop-side cribs because of the potential danger they pose.

Attorney Jeffrey Killino’s focus is on keeping kids safe and knows problems associated with your children through no fault of their own is a very serious matter and can leave a parent feeling helpless. If you believe your child was injured or has developed a serious illness as a result of a recalled, faulty or dangerous product, please recalled baby product attorney Jeffrey Killino at 877-875-2927 today.

We have an important recall to tell you about regarding certain child restraint systems. Evenflo has announced a voluntary recall of its Maestro combination booster seats. The recall affects almost 14,000 units all because of a crack that happened during testing.

No reports of injuries have been reported, but Evenflo decided to be proactive.

The model numbers in question begin with 310 and were manufactured between December of last year and April of 2010.

Potential Problem

Evenflow says if a crash were to occur, a crack may form at the front of the seat near the harness adjuster. This could cause a toddler to not be safely restrained and run the risk of getting hurt. Basically, the seats did not meet federal structural requirements.

Evenflo is offering a free repair kit and is urging caregivers NOT to return the product to the store. Consumers can call 800-233-5921 to receive a kit.

Past Car Seat Recalls

This is hardly the first time an Evenflo car seat recall has been issued. Back in November of 2009, the company recalled some of its First Choice Infant car seats. This occurred because a label required by the government was omitted from the seats.

More serious recalls have involved Dorel infant car seats. In December of 2009, as many as 400,000 units were recalled because of fall hazard that could injure a baby. Apparently, the handle can loosen and dislodge when it is being used as a carrier.

That same year, Lerado Success recalled more than 5,000 Mia Moda Viva and Mia Moda Viva Supreme infant car seats because of the potential for cracking and that if involved in a crash, could possibly injure a child.

These companies are not alone. Statistics have shown that as many as 20 different models of child car seats have been recalled over the past 20 years. The reasons vary, but many were recalled for simply failing to meet federal safety standards. Other reasons include specific defects such as the child restraint handles becoming loose and falling off, which can pose a fall hazard to children.

Over the years, other flaws such as straps made with material that is less than adequate or material that can rip apart too easily or a type that can catch fire have caused problems for families. Other issues include faulty hooks or latches that come undone when mild pressure is applied, or latches that are too hard to undo, making it difficult to remove the child during an emergency.

When a child is hurt because of car seat design or because of faulty part, then the parents of that child may desire to take legal action against the company who manufactured the product. If your child was injured or worse in a car crash, you should have the car seat and crash examined and investigated by Jeffrey killino to determine if it was a defective car seat.
