Pottery Barn Kids Recall Bunk Beds

by Administrator 18. August 2010 20:34

If it seems like I just blogged about a recall involving Pottery Barn Kids, that's because I did. The company recently recalled more than 80,000 drop side cribs. Unfortunately we're receiving word of yet another recall involving a product from Pottery Barn Kids. On August 3, 2010, the company voluntarily recalled more than 405 bunk beds.

The problem centers around the same problem that the drop side cribs were recalled for. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says part of the bunk bed can actually create an entrapment hazard for little kids. Specifically, children, can actually get their necks caught in between the opening of the bed post and what can be described as decorative molding.

Consumers should know that the bunk beds were sold at Pottery Barn Kids stores as well as catalog and at www.potterybarnkids.com from July 2009 to March 2010 and retailed for about $1,400. The bunk beds were manufactured in Vietnam.

What should parents do?

Although no injuries have been reported it is recommended that consumers who purchased this type of bunk bed should stop using this child product immediately and contact Pottery Barn Kids to schedule installation of a free repair kit at (888) 779-8692 between 7 a.m. and midnight PT seven days a week.

Pottery Barn Issues Recall on Drop-Side Cribs

by Administrator 18. August 2010 20:24

We have an important recall to tell you about. The store known for hip home accessories is recalling more than 80,000 drop-side cribs. The July 14th voluntary recall from Pottery Barn Kids and the Consumer Product Safety Commission was announced because of a risk of falls as well as entrapment and possibly suffocation.

The recall comes after Pottery Barn Kids received more than 35 reports of drop-side problems and issues, which resulted in 7 minor injuries.

The problem is the same as past recalls involving drop-side cribs from other crib companies. Safety experts say the drop side cribs can come apart. That in turn, creates a large space that could possibly cause an infant or baby to get caught. Another hazard can occur when the drop-sides detach because of hardware breaks or simply not putting the crib together correctly.

It is important to note that children can also become trapped at that head of the crib near the drop side and the actual mattress.

The cribs were manufactured in various countries including Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Italy and it is recommended that parents stop using the cribs immediately.

The Pottery Barn Kids drop-side cribs were sold at Pottery Barn Kids retail stores nationwide, through the Pottery Barn Kids catalog and on their website from January 1999 through March 2010.

Crib Recall C & T International Sorelle

by Administrator 7. May 2010 07:22

Just a few days ago, I blogged about a huge recall involving cribs that posed a strangulation and a suffocation hazard. Now comes word of yet another crib recall. This time it involves C&T International/Sorelle cribs. On Thursday May 6, 2010 The U.S Consumer Product Safety
Commission recalled as many as 170,000 Drop-Side Cribs.

The cribs are distributed under the name Golden Baby Inc.

The CPSC says the hazard centers on the cribs' drop-side hardware. Officials say it can disengage from the tracks, causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop-side partially detaches, it creates space between the drop side and the crib mattress.

The bodies of infants and toddlers can become trapped in the space, which can lead to strangulation and/or suffocation. Complete detachment of the drop sides can lead to falls from the crib. In addition, slats can detach from the sides of the cribs. Infants and toddlers can then become entrapped, strangle or fall out of the crib.

So far, the CPSC and C&T/Sorelle have received reports of  more than 100 incidents of drop-side and slat detachments in C&T/Sorelle drop-side cribs.

Six infants received bruises and abrasions to the head, face, torso or leg from becoming entrapped or falling after the drop side collapsed. An
additional five infants who were entrapped or fell were found by their parents and were not injured.

The full-size cribs were sold at various children's product stores around the country from January 2000 through March 2010 for between
$300 and $600.

The cribs were manufactured in different countries including Italy, Latvia, Brazil, China and Vietnam.

The CPSC has some recommendations for parents and caregivers. They are urging them to immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby.

Consumers should contact C&T/Sorelle to receive a free replacement kit. For four of the older models of the cribs - the Hampton, Jackie, Nina and Rita models -- the firm may be unable to supply a part to repair the crib and will, instead, provide consumers with a $100 voucher towards the purchase of another C&T product.

The recalled  Models Include:

  • Alessandra; Model Number 180

  • Alex 3 in 1; Model Number 910
  •
Amelia; Model Number 185

Third Major Crib Recall in Three Months!

by Administrator 24. February 2010 20:52

Just last Fall I blogged about how the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled more than two million drop-side cribs, manufactured by Stork Craft, Inc. because of a suffocation hazard. Now comes word of yet another major crib problem that could put children at risk.

Today the CPSC announced the recall of the Generation 2 World and ChildESIGNS. The recall is the third major recall in as many months and includes 500,000 units. The problem centers around two defects. The CPSC says gaps might actually trap children, causing them to suffocate or strangle. The other problem stems from plastic hardware that can break. If this happens, it can force the crib's side to detach and drop. It should be noted that this company is now defunct.

Over the past three years, three deaths have been reported to the CPSC involving the Generation 2 Worldwide and "ChildESIGNS" cribs. Back in the Summer of 2007, an 8 month old infant from Newark, Ohio because of suffocation associated with this particular crib brand. But two other deaths go back much further than that. In October of 2003 another infant was killed after suffocating. A year before that, a 6 month old from Virginia died in the same manner. What's even scarier is that we are just learning about the safety hazard and the deaths of three innocent children NOW.

The agency warns parents not to fix the problems but to contact the store where the crib was purchased.

Last month, the CPSC announced the recall of 20 models of Dorel Asia cribs. This particular brand also has drop down sides. This 635,000 unit recall was spurred after a 6 month old boy died. All these recalls have a common theme. They involve cribs with drop sides and many were manufactured in China.

The Killino law firm has extensive experience with Chinese products and is a leader in Chinese product lawsuits. In fact, my firm was responsible for causing a national recall of 450,000 tires manufactured in China, and filed a class action lawsuit to compel Mattel to provide free testing of all children who played with lead toys.

My focus is on keeping kids safe and I know that child injuries are very serious and can leave a parent feeling helpless. If you believe your child was injured as a result of a faulty or recalled consumer product please contact child injury attorney Jeffrey Killino at 877-875-2927 today.

Dorel Asia Recalls Cribs over Strangulation and Suffocation Hazard

by Administrator 20. January 2010 17:04

We have yet another recall involving cribs to tell you about. Dorel Asia is recalling as many as 635,000 cribs because they pose strangulation and suffocation hazards. At least one infant has died and 10 injuries have been reported.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados announced the voluntary. It centers around drop side and non-drop side cribs.

The CPSC says the drop side hardware can fail causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. In addition, the recalled cribs can pose a serious entrapment and strangulation hazard when a slat is damaged. This can occur while the crib is in use, in storage, being put together, taken apart or reassembled; or during shipping and handling.

The cribs were sold at K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700 and were manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs, find an alternative safe sleeping environment for your child, and contact Dorel Asia to receive a free replacement kit. Consumers should log on to www.dorel-asia.com to order the free replacement kit to prevent child entrapment in these cribs. The repair kits will be provided to owners within the next several weeks.

The following Dorel Asia cribs are involved in the recall:

Roman-style shades being recalled

by Administrator 15. December 2009 12:59

Roman-style shades being recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a major recall of popular window coverings. As many as 50 million Roman-style shades and roll-up blinds are being recalled after reports of babies and toddlers dying from strangulation. The CPSC says the shades and roll-up blinds, which have cords that can get caught around children's necks. The danger centers around the possibility of an infant's head getting caught between the cord and the fabric, as well as the baby's head getting caught in the cord.

Roll-up blinds have a large loop at the end of the cord that can strangle young children, the CPSC said, adding that 3 children have died from the roll-up blinds' hazard since 2000. The recall affects 27 million roll-up blinds.

The commission said about 5 million Roman shades and 3 million roll-up blinds are sold each year.

The CPSC is now working with the Window Covering Safety Council to provide repair kits at numerous retailers including JC Penney, Wal-Mart, Pottery barn and other big retailers.

This is not the first time a major recall of blinds has been issued. Back in 2000 the CPSC also worked with the Window Covering Safety Council to recall 85 billion window blinds. The recall mostly affected Venetian and vertical blinds. An official from the CPSC adds that the current standards are not adequate to protect the safety of children." Spokesman Scott Wolf says "The recall will push the industry in the right direction to see what other stronger steps can be taken."

As mentioned in past blogs, it is imperative that consumers, especially parents be diligent when purchasing items that could affect children. This latest recall of blinds is a perfect example of the potential harm a basic household product can cause.

Child injuries are very serious and can leave a parent feeling helpless. If you believe your child has been injured because of a defective or recalled product, please contact child injury attorney Jeffrey Killino at 877-875-2927 today.

Stork Craft Crib Recall

by Administrator 24. November 2009 15:34

It's happened again. There has been yet another crib recall. In fact it's the biggest crib recall in U.S. history and it is linked to four suffocation deaths. More than 2 million drop-side cribs made by Stork Craft Manufacturing of Canada are being recalled. Sales of the cribs in question date back to 1993 and nearly 150,000 of the cribs carry the Fisher-Price logo.

The manufacturer is going on the defensive by saying said the four deaths linked to the recall happened a long time ago and were found to be a result of improper use. A company spokesperson said all parents need to do to fix the crib is to install a free kit from the company that converts the drop-side to a fixed, immovable side, but that does little to put parents at ease, especially since these cribs pose a potentially dangerous situations for innocent children.

This is far from the first time a large amount of cribs have been recalled. In fact, in January, Stork Craft recalled about 500,000 cribs because of problems with the metal brackets that support the mattress. This past July, Health Canada expanded its recall of Simplicity drop-side cribs to include three model numbers when the CPSC announced the recall of the brand's drop-side cribs by retailers.

ASTM International, an organization that sets voluntary industry safety standards for everything from toys to the steel used in commercial buildings, approved a new standard last week that requires four immovable sides for full-size cribs — a big step toward eliminating the manufacture of new drop-side cribs since the industry group won't certify them.

In Suffolk County, N.Y., legislation was signed into law Tuesday that bans the sale of any crib with a side that moves up and down. The law takes effect in February and is believed to be a first ban of its kind. Hopefully it will save lives.
